Memories of a Bygone Era

Wed, 08/17/2022 - 7:00am by RAW

U. S. Legacies is the place to share true historical stories about life, from the last generation in this country that traveled in covered wagons, horse and buggies or Model T's, went to one room schools, lived through one or two world wars or cooked on wood burning stoves.

Our goal is to obtain, preserve and share as many of these stories as possible, before the last remaining survivor of this special generation, leave us.

Rosa Jackson Rains Walked behind a covered wagon, as her family moved to their new home in Oklahoma. She shares stories about laying on the kitchen table while a doctor operated on her, and fond memories of using crayons to color paper for Christmas Decorations, because her family didn't have "no boughten paper."

Fannie L Prothro was born in 1895. She left a diary about her life as a child, growing up in Texas. She talks about men using Oxen to pull logs across a road, as a way to level or smooth the dirt roads, the attitude of townsfolk, when the first telephone was installed in town, and many other interesting aspects of a previous lifestyle.

Kenneth Hill One side of his family, traveled the "Trail of Tears" while the other side fought beside General Sheridan. He shares stories about owning a gun that Pretty Boy Floyd's brother carried for over 20 years, finding cannon balls and confederate money as well as many other historical and interesting tidbits.

Melinda Long As a professional storyteller, she shares great stories handed down from her father, about brooms that were made out of brush, making lard and, many other aspects of the old country style way of life.

Mary Smith Shares memories of a lifestyle where she used bricks to keep her feet warm while riding in a buggy during the winter, wearing underpants made from flour sacks, the practice of Shivaree, Egg Candling, making Whey, and many other aspects of a bygone era.

Cliff Olson Shares stories about his fathers life in Sweden and what is was like for him to come to America by himself, at the age of 16 and not being able to speak a word of English. Cliff also discusses his own life, including time he spent working as a cowboy, with Ben Johnson, Jr. the actor that costarred with John Wayne in western movies.
