Thousands change their routines to try ‘something different.’

They gave up Wednesday night volleyball, the concluding episode of “I’ll take Manhattan,” on television and other middle-of-the-week fare.

I believe my favorite Christmas toy was the plastic accordion I received when I was about six or seven years old. My cousin Tut, who was 5 years older than I was, had always had his accordion with him when the family came down from New Hampshire for our old fashioned Swedish Christmas at Grammy and Grampy's house in Connecticut.
"I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. 'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,' I thought.
Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.
'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to me. 'Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan.'

Those of us old enough to remember when the phone was wired to the wall, usually in the kitchen, can relate to this story. I loved this read.
When I was a young boy, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box.. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it.

75 years ago today, January 12, 1949, Kukla, Fran and Ollie premiered on NBC. Originally created for children but soon watched by more adults than children. It did not have a script and was entirely ad-libbed. It was first aired from 1947 to 1957. The first NBC network broadcast of the show took place on January 12, 1949. It aired from 6–6:30 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday from Chicago.
I have no idea who put this together, but it is wonderful, especially if you’re North of 70!

The photograph to the left is of my grandparents Edward and Melissa Parker. He was a farmer and they also had a coal mine on their property at one time. I don’t know what happened, but one of their boys fell into a shaft and died.
Lucretia Mott, born January 8, 1793.
Lucretia Mott was the pioneer of the equal rights movement for women and one of the founders of the Equal Rights Association. A Quaker minister, Lucretia with husband and fellow teacher James Mott had also been actively involved in the American Anti-Slavery Society. Mott stayed active in the fight for women's equal rights into her seventies and died on November 11, 1880.
