Wartime Comments

I was with Patton in Sicily in July 1943. We landed at Gela, and started due north. We went through many small villages. They were making tomato paste. The crushed tomatoes were placed on boards in front of the houses, in the steaming, hot sun.. Also, in the very hot weather, were millions of flies all over the crushed tomatoes. Enjoy your spaghetti and meat balls. Hot dogs tomorrow for sure.

Boxing.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?
 

Niagara Falls. The rim is worn down about two and a half feet each year because of the millions of gallons of water that rush over it every minute.

1 doz green peppers
1 doz red and yellow peppers
3 large onions, chop very fine
cover with boiling water, let stand 10 minutes,
drain, cover again with boiling water
let stand again 10 minutes, drain very dry
add 3 table spoons salt
2 pints vinegar
2 cups granulated sugar

Directions: cook 15 minutes, pack into jars

Abraham Lincoln needed votes. In January of 1864, as the Civil War raged on, the president was gearing up for a re-election campaign, believing his loss was imminent. But in order to unify the shattered pieces of the nation and abolish slavery, he needed four more years. With more time, he could end slavery with a law, but that law needed votes, which, by his own count, he knew he didn’t have.

On the evening of April 14, 1865, while attending a special performance of the comedy, "Our American Cousin," President Abraham Lincoln was shot. Accompanying him at Ford's Theatre that night were his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, a twenty-eight year-old officer named Major Henry R. Rathbone, and Rathbone's fiancée, Clara Harris. After the play was in progress, a figure with a drawn derringer pistol stepped into the presidential box, aimed, and fired. The president slumped forward.

Labor Day has come to mean two different things in our country, a day to honor the working man and the last three-day weekend of summer. Both are great reasons to celebrate!

Coming from a family of hard workers, I appreciate the day in their honor. Our country was built by these people! My grandfather toiled each day on the railroad, and my father spent over thirty years building automobiles. I’m grateful to have been taught their strong work ethic and to have learned the satisfaction that a hard days work brings.

I have been told in the past, that I have a one track mind. That I am like a bull dog and when I dig my teeth into a project, I do not let go until that project is finished. And while I wear many hats here at U.S. Legacies, whatever project I tackle first thing I the morning, that is the project that I attempt to finish before moving on. This technique keeps my nose to the grindstone and many times I get so absorbed in whatever project I am working on, that I become totally oblivious to other things that need tending to.

Life is just a yummy plate of garden vegetables. Yes, it sounds corny, but I’ve always found comfort in the simple truth of this metaphor. Tasty, homegrown vegetables from my garden remind me of the beauty, joy, and serenity, which more than compensates for all the hard work, muscle strain, pest and diseases encountered along the way.
