Alice and her husband, Forest, raised 3 children on Bishop St., in North Atlanta, GA. Near the Atlanta Water Works. She loved cooking and never followed a recipe. She always prepared a huge Sunday dinner where she could feed an army because she couldn’t stop, with just one meat. She cooked ham, chicken and roast and every vegetable imaginable.
Cooking Southern Style

A stranger could taste my down-home cooking and probably guess I was raised in the Deep South, Alabama to be exact. As a child, I stood on a stool and watched my mother fry everything from chicken and pork chops to okra and potatoes. She rolled out the biscuits by hand and always cooked cornbread in an iron skillet.

The lamp at the end of the couch casts a soft glow of light over Grandma's hands as she crochets. "Tiny," she says, "your loops must be very tiny." Looking at her neat chain of loops, then at mine, I felt like giving up, but once again, I tore them apart and started over.
I crocheted foot after foot of those tiny loops before she would teach me any other stitch. "You must have a good foundation before you start or you're just wasting your time," she'd say.
Grandma's Kitchen
In this issue I am paying tribute to my Grandmother. Lisa Redd has also written about her Grandmother. Our grandchildren can read these years from now. It will tell them something about the special women they never knew.

Thoughts
A closed mouth gathers no feet.
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end.
The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.
It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere.
Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun.

1 can apple pie filling (any other type pie filling can be used)
1 box yellow cake mix
1 stick margarine
Directions:
Pour pie filling in 9x12 baking dish.
Sprinkle 1 box dry cake mix over pie filling.
Melt 1 stick of margarine, drizzle over cake mix,

A house is a house unless its your Grandmas house then its special.
I know because I have childhood memories of my Grandmas special house in a German neighborhood now known as Wrigleyville, two blocks from Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs.
Wagon Train History: Story telling Style

Scenes in many of the wagon train movies show some historical content along with fiction. Wagon travel was used from the 1700’s into the early 1900’s. The last major wagon travel with a large group of people was the great gold rush 1897 to 1898.
English style Cranberry Sauce
Makes 8 - 10 servings
12-ounce bag fresh cranberries
½ cup firmly packed light brown sugar, or to taste
1/4 cup port or sherry, more or less to taste
Combine the ingredients in a large saucepan. Cook over low heat, covered, until the cranberries have burst and the mixture thickens, about 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool, then refrigerate until needed. Serve cold or at room temperature.
